COMMUNITY SERVICE COMMITTEE

OVERVIEW

The Committee on Community Service shall extend Christian compassion and assistance to those in need and promote congregational awareness and participation in activities to meet such needs. The Committee represents this congregation by maintaining contact with churches, charitable agencies, and benevolent organizations on the local, state, national, and global levels. The Committee coordinates with the Fellowship Committee on charitable activities.

Anyone may volunteer to participate on this Committee.  The current members are:

MEETING SCHEDULE

The Committee meets on the first Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at the church.

Sojourn “Shower” to collect nightwear, slippers, diapers for women and children at the shelter (Mary)

Grace Food Pantry collection of specified needs and/or monetary donations (Doug)

June:
Contact Ministries:  collection of needed household items, for families transitioning from the shelter to their own home (Elizabeth)
Habitat for Humanity ReStore: building supplies/needs for pickup or delivery (see contact info on display)

ONGOING OPPORTUNITIES FOR VOLUNTEERING YOUR TIME

Blackhawk Elementary School Library:
Help staff the Library one-half day each week, morning or afternoon session, currently on Wednesdays. Check in books on the computer, reshelf books, check out books to students on the computer. Training will be provided. (Sally)

Mentor/tutor Blackhawk students:
Attend training session, and pass a background check. Contact Principal Terrence Jordan at 525-3195 to find out more about mentoring or tutoring.

Compass After School Program:
Currently Wednesdays from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. at Southside Christian Church; one-on-one tutoring for students, life skills, snack, and dinner. Contact Molly Berendt mberendt@service2families.org or Shana Waldinger swaldinger@service2families.org if you are interested in volunteering at Compass.

Grace Lutheran Church Food Pantry:
Contact Doug McFarlan about opportunities to volunteer at the Food Pantry. Peace supports Grace Food Pantry with volunteer hours, and donations from the church and individuals year round. And the Food Pantry helps us provide Holiday food baskets for needy individuals.

Aluminum Cans:
Save your cans! All money received from recycling aluminum cans will go to purchase ELCA Good Gifts, such as barnyard animals and water purification tablets. Drop off your rinsed aluminum cans anytime you are at church. They can be left by the recycle bins in the coffee bar/library room. We CAN do it!

Central Illinois Food Bank, Contact Ministries, Grace Food Pantry, Habitat for Humanity, LCFS, LSSI, Mini O'Beirne Crisis Nursery, Ministerial Alliance, Serving Jesus Wiillingly, and World Hunger.
